Urban environmental research is undertaken within an extended urban metabolism context where goals relate to:

  • using fewer resources more efficiently
  • using wastes as resources
  • restoring and maintaining urban environmental ecosystem quality
  • enhancing human well-being
  • implementing highly efficient and effective urban and industrial
  • planning, design and management systems, and
  • not confusing liveability with sustainability

Major areas of research focus relate to:

  • understanding the determinants of urban resource consumption ; behaviour change
  • transitioning from state of environment reporting to sustainability reporting
  • overcoming the barriers to urban technological innovation in 21st century cities.
  • delivering sustainable and affordable housing
